Getting to Cartagena

From Australia: you can either fly via the US (e.g. Dallas with Qantas) or through Santiago, Chile. Most connections go through Bogota but there are some direct flights from e.g. Miami, Atlanta, and New York.

From Europe: many major cities have direct flights to Bogota where you can transfer to Cartagena.

Another option is to fly to Miami where you can find direct flights to Cartagena.

There appear to be some direct flights to Cartagena from Amsterdam, Madrid and Zurich but they are less frequent.

Travel within Colombia

There is a world of adventures to explore within Colombia.

Cartagena's old town is like stepping back 400 years in time and being part of a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel. Amazing!

Colonial towns such as Barichara and Villa de Leyva are amazing to experience. Around Barichara there is river rafting and MTB riding.

Further up the coast from Cartagena you can explore Santa Marta, treck to Ciudad Perdida, climb Pico Cristobal Colon, and visit the Tayrona national park.

Cities like Medellin and Cali will provide additional cultural insights and opportunities for salsa. Bogota is great to experience but it has a big traffic problem.

Other interesting areas are the coffee region, hiking in El Cocuy, Cano Cristales, Amazonas, etc.

Travel within the region

South America offers a world of opportunities. World class sights include Cusco, Machu Pichu, Lake Titicaca, The Amazonas, Galapagos Islands, The Easter Islands, Iguazu Falls, and Patagonia. But that is just scratching the surface.

Cities like Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro are amazing places to spend a couple of days. Don't miss a tango show in Buenos Aires!

Outside of South America you also have Central America where Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize are interesting places to visit. How about scuba diving in the Blue Hole in Belize?

Another option is cruising in the Caribbean.
